Cultivating and collaborating

NAI works with people who have technical skills and great ideas to solve environmental problems.

 What’s the potential of AI?

When you work with environmental systems such as climate or animal populations, you deal with vast amounts of data. Old ways of processing and modelling simply can’t deal with that data efficiently. AI can. The technology now exists to take ideas that seemed impossible before and make them possible.

OUR PROJECTS

What ideas are we working on now?

  PREDATOR FREE 2050

Teaching AI to detect predators

Using deep learning and state of the art computer vision, we analyse over 150,000 infra-red camera images to identify threats to native wildlife.

 WHALE LIGHTHOUSE

Using AI to monitor and protect marine mammals

By combining AI with custom-built hydrophones, NAI is helping to create a marine mammal monitoring system. We use AI to detect, classify and track the calls of different marine mammals.

 AUTOMATED TAXONOMY

Freeing scientists to do what they do best

Many scientists would prefer to spend less time looking through a microscope and more time on research. We can free them up by teaching computers to identify microscopic organisms or materials.

 CARBONCROP

Using AI to simplify claiming carbon credits

The first project to spin out into its own company. CarbonCo uses AI to examine imagers of a landowner’s land to make claiming carbon credits faster and easier. That encourages more planting, which is what the earth needs.
