CARBONCROP

Applying AI to Carbon Credits

Landowners are already busy enough working their land. What they miss out on is the opportunities provided by carbon credits. Making it easy to assess and claim carbon credits helps encourage planting trees. It also gives landowners another source of income that can be used to improve their land use further.

The challenge

The process of claiming carbon credits can be time-consuming and confusing. So many landowners don’t do it. Opportunities get missed to improve agricultural resilience and productivity, restore degraded landscapes, increase biodiversity, and boost farm profitability.

Our solution

We apply state of the art Artificial Intelligence to a mix of satellite and aerial imagery of the landowner’s planting from the last 40 years. This is combined with other data such as climate data, topography and soil quality to rapidly build a precise picture of what is on the land. Not only is the picture of what is on the land at present but also was there in the past and what might be there in the future.

This data gets turned into a carbon credit application of unparalleled accuracy because it identifies more and provides better evidence than traditional methods. And this happens quickly, needing little attention from the landowner.

AI in action

In early 2021 this solution became CarbonCo , a spin-off company ready to stand alone and provide ground-breaking services to landowners all over the planet. CarbonCrop’s goal is to “pull a billion tons of CO2 out of the atmosphere and lock it up in trees.”
